The UN Environment Programme estimates that 2,000 rubbish trucks full of plastic are dumped into the ocean, rivers and lakes every single day. That’s somewhere between 19 and 23 million tonnes of plastic waste leaking into our aquatic ecosystems every year. Microplastics are in salt, beer, fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as our drinking water and we now know that our own bodies are widely contaminated with them; they have been found in blood, breast milk, placentas and bone marrow. The impact on human health is largely unknown, but some evidence shows these tiny plastic particles in blood vessels are linked to a greater risk of a heart attack or stroke.
